Tweaking Your Campaigns in Adwords

The discussion here is primarily on the adgroups, ads and keywords.
Make sure you have 3-4 adgroups.
Under each adgroup, I suggest you have a maximum of 2 ads for doing a split test.
Don't create more than 2 ads and at the same time don't go with just one.
Google will rotate the two ads and you will find that one of them performs better than the other.
You will get to know which ad is performing better in just about 2-3 days.
It is time to pause the ad that is not performing.
Adgroups, ads must be centered around a theme.
To take an example;
Search by phone number; the adgroup name, the ads and the keywords should center around this theme.
Background check; the adgroup name, the ads and the keywords should center around this theme.
You will get better CTRs and Quality Scores for the adgroups, ads which have the keywords within them (relevancy factor which is high on google's agenda)
Now, let us look at the keywords. How many keywords do you have in each of your adgroups?
I can tell you from what has worked for me.
Don't have more than 4-5 keywords, sometimes your adgroup can very well perform with just one single keyword, yes, just one keyword.
I have seen the CTR for some of the keywords go up to about 10-15%.
But to get to this, you may start with 10-15 keywords in the beginning and start deleting the keywords for which you are only getting impressions but no clicks.
This would take may be 3-4 days.
Then, start pausing the keywords that are under performers. You can set your own benchmark. For me, anything less than 2 is not good.
Google comes out with new suggestions when you select the opportunities tab - these keyword lists are updated may be once a week or a fortnight.
See if any of those keywords make sense before selecting them and putting them in your adgroup. My experience says, may be 1 or 2 of those keywords per adgroup should be enough.
Within a week's time, you will have a campaign which should give you a CTR of 2 and above, lower costs, higher ad positions and quality signups/sales.
Then on, it is just a matter of checking out everyday and doing a bit of tweaking here and there which should take about 5 minutes of your time.

I have a Google Adwords account. One of my campaign is running with a CTR of 4.5%+! It is an affiliate program I am promoting.

Here is how you can avoid those bans/slaps from Google.

Make sure you have original content on your landing page. This is the toughest part. I have seen many would just copy someone else's content and start using it. Try to be creative, write your own content or get it written by good content writers and make sure it is unique. You must have a good landing page otherwise you can't run a PPC ad with Google.

Make sure that you are not stuffing your content with keywords. That is a big no no.

Make sure your domain is registered for at least couple of years. That is one of the way you are giving a message to the search engines that you are in it for long term and you are not a fly by night operator.

If you are buying a domain, make sure that the name you choose aligns with the business that you are promoting.

I received an email with the ominous title "Your Google AdWords account has been disabled" Here are a couple excerpts from the email: "We are writing to let you know that your Google AdWords account has been disabled due to one or more serious violations of our advertising policies related to Landing Page and Site Quality.  As a result, your ads will no longer run through the Google AdWords system and we are unable to accept advertising from you in the future.  Please note that future accounts you open will also be disabled. As part of our commitment to making the AdWords experience safe and effective for our users and our advertisers, we routinely review the landing pages that our advertisers promote through our search and content networks.  If we find that an advertiser has submitted a landing page that egregiously violates our policies, we reserve the right to take immediate account-level action. The last paragraph of the email is even more disturbing, frustrating and absurd: "Our support team is unable to provide any further information. Please do not contact us again." Google Begins Banning AdWords Advertisers Again: December '09 Big Ban

As you know, Google promised to ban AdWords advertisers at a higher rate and began doing so in late September and throughout November but promised to really step it up later last month.
I spotted a new thread at Google AdWords Help which has what appears to be dozens of advertisers who started getting banned yesterday, December 3rd, at the stroke of midnight. So when it turned into December 3rd, it seems like a bunch of automatic bans just went out and impacted tons of advertisers. There are also ongoing discussion about these bans at WebmasterWorld.
So it looks like a new Google strike on AdWords advertisers has come down.
Here is a copy of a ban email from Google these days:

Dear advertiser, We are writing to let you know that your Google AdWords account has been disabled due to one or more serious violations of our advertising policies related to Landing Page and Site Quality. As a result, your ads will no longer run through the Google AdWords system and we are unable to accept advertising from you in the future. Please note that future accounts you open will also be disabled.
As part of our commitment to making the AdWords experience safe and effective for our users and our advertisers, we routinely review the landing pages that our advertisers promote through our search and content networks. If we find that an advertiser has submitted a landing page that egregiously violates our policies, we reserve the right to take immediate account-level action.

If you are into PPC, You need to build effective landing pages

Well, you have decided that you are fedup of your full time job.
Thought that it is easy to earn money online sitting at the comforts of your home.
You decide to take up affiliate marketing.
To drive traffic to your affiliate links, you sign up with Google Adwords.
Start promoting your links with Google and find it difficult to get a good quality score and invariably get a google slap which means google demands $10 per click which is absurd and makes sure that you only lose money and not earn a dime!

A brief update on my progress

I started off on my quest on internet marketing in Jan 09.
Lost couple fo thousand dollars till March 09. Yes, I did.

For almost 2 months I did not do anything as I did not know how to go about it :)

Quick Start Guide to Google Adwords For Newbies

One of the problems for any newbies is trying out Google Adwords is they spend more than they earn. It is also easy to get a Google SLAP if you don't do it irght. What I am giving here are very simple steps to start with Google Adwords. Shall discuss the Google Slap in a subsequent post.

Here goes!

1. Make sure you have a good landing page
2. Signup with Adwords
3. Do not create any campaigns in Adwords
4. Download Adwords editor
5. Create a campaign, adgroup and ad
6. Get google to Scan your site and suggest keywords
7. If google is suggesting some real stupid keywords, your landing page is not relevant, rewrite/correct it.
8. Check all the keywords and discard what you don't deem fit
9. use the keyword grouper option within adwords editor
10. It will group your keywords into multiple adgroups
11 check/review each of the adgroup and its keywords, discard those you don't want.
12. Verify all the details once carefully
13. Make sure that none of the adgroups has more than 15-20 keywords
14. If any adgroup has more than 15+ keywords better create a new adgroup and put them under that adgroup
15. Upload your ad to Adwords
16. Let the adwords team review your campaign (give 30 minutes to an hour)
17. Check the quality score of your keywords
18. Any keyword less than 5/10, delete the keyword
19. Run the campaign
20. Google will display ads from better performing adgroups and your costs will go down while increasing CTR and Quality scores gradually
21. Keep reviewing and keep removing keywords with Quality score less than 5/10
22. I will write about the campaign optimizer and opportunities features in the detailed guide.

Your cost per click (CPC) also depends on various factors.
1. The history of your campaigns. If you have had a bad start, history will be cruel to you.
2. Competition
3. Geographies that you are targeting

You can't help that there is so much competition for some of the keywords, especially keywords related to people searches, make money online, weight loss programs.....

There are contrasting views of highly competitive keywords, one school  saying don't bid for them and at the same time there is another school that says, if there is competition, then people are making money!

Focus on increasing your Quality Score and Click Through Rate. Over a period of time, the most competitive keyword will cost less as your ad position goes up into the top.

With usage of all these tools and techniques, it takes about a week to a fortnight for your campaign to be optimized. During these 1-2 weeks, you need to regularly review and keep making adjustments to your keywords, ads (don't touch the bids yet) to improve on the CTR and Quality Score.

Use the conversion tracker. Build a history of data for at least 2 weeks. That will give an indication of which adgroups are performing better. Then, you can discard/pause those adgroups.

Hmm,

It was really a tough nut for quite sometime.
If you don't get your PPC right, you are in deep trouble. Instead of making money, you will lose money.
After a proper study and understanding of how it works, have made my adwords profitable.
