Edakkal Caves - Near Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad District, Kerala

I had to drive down from Bangalore to Sultan Bathery for a meeting with my business associates who were driving down from Trivandrum. I happened to reach around 8:30AM in the morning and the guys called me and said it will take a couple of hours for them as they were still at Calicut (Kozhikode). They suggested that may be I do a bit of sight seeing and suggested Edakkal Caves which is just about 10-12KM from Sultan Bathery.

Edakkal caves have sketchings dating back to 4000 BC. Technically, they call it as "Petroglyphs". Here are some pictures for you. Pictures say what thousand words can't say! I am not that expressive, anyway :)

This is supposed to be litter free area. But, I found quite few people throwing plastic bottles, covers and shouting at the top of their voices within the caves. When will people learn?

This is me! Tired, drenched in sweat (though it was a really cool place!) after climbing all the way up! I must have lost couple of kilos, thanks to the exercise!

Here are some pictures that I have taken from Bandipur National Park. These are wild animals not the ones in Zoo! I came across this a lone tusker right in the middle of the road! Then, see the smart herd of deer which are grazing by the road side, protected from predators, safe and still at a safe distance from humans.

Service Tax Calculation

Here is something I recently found out, thanks to being an Entrepreneur!

I invoiced one of my customers for X amount. The current service tax is 10.3%. The total invoice value hence is X+Y(Service Tax component). Then, my customer deducts 10% TDS. Here comes the fun part.

I thought, the TDS has to be on the invoice value. i.e, X. But, my customer deducted TDS on the total amount. i.e, X+Y.

Technically, it should have been on X. I checked with my auditor and he said there is a confusion in this regard. People to play safe and be out of trouble, they include service tax component while deducting TDS.

This is what happens when there is no clarity among the various departments on the taxation!

Cost of Progress! What is happening to the erstwhile Garden City?

Bangalore used to be such a beautiful place. Well, I was born and brought up in Bangalore. I have been a mute spectator to the happenings in Bangalore - some good, some bad.

The road from Anandarao Circle towards Cubbon Park is called Sheshadri road. This was a fairly wide road and lined up with tall and wide trees on either side. Last year, the powers be decided this has to be widened further to ensure smoother traffic flow. They chopped down all the trees and widened the road. Has traffic flow improved? Yes, marginally. Many of us strongly feel, with proper planning this could have been achieved. This road is to be one of the coolest places in Bangalore even in mid summer. Now, it is scorching thanks to lack of foliage.

The latest victim of these activities is the Mysore Road. Here is a picture to show you what is happening!

This road is wide enough. The real problem? Unruly motorists who don't give a damn! Forget people respecting rules and regulations. They don't have respect for their lives nor other peoples lives. Drivers/Riders from extreme left veer change their minds and turn right and vice versa. Two wheeler riders, ride on footpaths - come on, footpaths are meant for people walking! Then, there are honk happy drivers - cab drivers, owner driven high end cars. The guy in front of you has someone in front of him/her, and that guy has someone in front of him/her, and traffic is moving slowly. Just by honking, you think, the road will open up like the sea did for Moses?

And then, people have stopped at the signal and are waiting for it to go green. Now, we also have counters displaying how much time is left before it goes green. There we have these great drivers honking and swearing at the people in front of them as if signals don't exist for them.

Who are these great people anyway? They are you and me! We are all educated, know our manners, the good, the bad et al.

Lalbagh flower show. August 15th 2010

Every year, we have flower shows during January and August in Lalbagh, a vast botanical garden in Bangalore. Historically, Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore built this (well, rather thousand of people built it). I had been to Chelsea flower show in England a few years back. We were still using film roles those days and unfortunately, I lost the roles. This one is sort of a make up for that. All these images were captured using a mobile phone which has a 2 MP camera.

Here are some pictures from the flower show on 15th of Aug 2010.

Pictures from Belur and Halebidu

Karnataka has many places that tourists visit. Some of these places are just a few hours drive from Bangalore (well, now officially called Bengaluru).

I am posting here a few pictures from Beluru and Halebidu which are in Hassan district about 200+ kilometers from Bangalore. The temples are based on Hoysala Architecture and have some of the most exquisite carvings. The 12th and 13th century temples were built by Hoysalas.

It takes about 4 hours to reach Belur from Bangalore. If you are leaving early in the morning, say by 6:00am, you can reach Belur around 10:00am with a break for some breakfast on the way. Belur has the beautiful Chennakeshava temple and to do justice you need to spend few hours and if you are an avid fan of Hoysala architecture, you can spend the whole day. Anyway, after you spend couple of hours enjoying the beautiful architecture, it is time for lunch and then to Halebidu which is about 15KM from Belur. Spend a few hours in Halebidu and if you are willing, more so, if your body is willing, you can then go to Shravanabelagola to see the giant monolithic statue of Bahubali (another 50-60KM on the way to Bangalore) and then back to Bangalore.

These images were captured using a 2.0MP mobile phone!

Well, enough said! See it to believe it. Here are the pictures. Enjoy.
